Another great and simple way to pull your hair back is to use a headband – it’s secure, easy to put on, and will instantly brighten up your whole look. Hairbands with a knotted top gives the look more volume and adds a boho-chic vibe.

Scarves

Whether you have long or short hair, you can nail the scarf look easily!

The great thing about scarves is that they’re so versatile and can be used on any hairstyle. Simply tie it around a low ponytail for that carefree, indie look. If you’ve got a short crop, you can add a girlish, vintage glam to your haircut by wrapping the scarf around your head and tying a double knot at the front.

Think about how cute you’d look for a weekend brunch or at a barbeque cookout!

Scarves, $9.99 or 2 for $15, available at available at Cotton On/ Rubi.

2. Looped Half Updo

Here’s a super simple hairstyle that’ll keep your hair neatly away from your face without you having to pull back all your hair tightly. It’s a sweet and feminine look that you can wear to school, the office, or even more formal functions. This style can also work with shoulder length or shorter hair!

Steps:
  • Take two small sections of hair from each side of your head, close to your temple
  • Twist the hair upwards and bring them to the back of your head, tying them with a small hair elastic.
  • On the right side of the twist, starting from your temple, pick up another small section of hair underneath the twist, and wrap it up and around the twist twice. This produces a fuller look. Secure the ends with a bobby pin.
  • Repeat the same for the left side.

3. Top knot

A casual top knot is the quintessential summer hairstyle. But it takes some art to land that perfectly messy look – you want free-spirited vibes but not come off as unkempt either. Have a pair of statement shades perched atop your head and you’ll look music-festival-ready! Here’s one of the easiest ways to tie a top knot:

Steps:
  • Pull your hair into a high ponytail with an elastic band
  • Separate the ponytail into two sections
  • Twist the sections and wrap them around each other into a bun
  • Secure with bobby pins
  • Puff up the bun by gently pulling out strands

Tip: If you’ve got really fine and straight hair, a top knot would hold better when you work with unwashed hair. For a full texture, spray on some dry shampoo before your start styling your hair.

If you’ve got shorter hair, try a variation – the half top knot is no less chic! It’s a quirky style that changes up your usual look and makes you look fresh. Simply gather the top portion of your hair and follow the steps above, or twist up the top section of your hair into a small bun and secure with a hair elastic. A bonus is that you’ll get cute waves when once you untie the top knot – a top notch look, we say!

3. Faux Fishtail Braid

If you’ve got long and thick hair, you may often feel uncomfortable when your hair sticks to your neck and back in this humid weather. Plus, you could also be bored of tying the usual ponytail or braid to keep all your hair up.

Well, if you’re one of those blessed with a gloriously full mane, then lucky you! There are so many ways you can play around with your tresses, such as creating this Faux Fishtail Braid – it’s less tedious than an actual fishtail braid, but no less gorgeous. Plus, it also keeps your hair in order in the warm weather! All it takes is some simple twisting and looping and a bunch of elastic hair bands to achieve this Princess Jasmine look.

Steps:
  • Sweep all your hair to one side over your shoulder.
  • Grab a big section in the middle and tie a loose ponytail with a small hair elastic.
  • Create an opening, turn the ponytail over and pull it through the opening.
  • Grab two sections of hair around the first loop and tie them together with a small hair elastic. Turn it over and pull it through the opening.
  • Repeat for the rest of your hair.
  • To make the ‘braids’ look fuller and less stiff, gently tease out some strands from each loop after you’re done with the full braid.

5. Messy Ponytail

Tired of pulling your tresses into a boring ponytail? Fix up a full, messy ponytail for a preppy cheerleader look instead! These simple tricks will give your mane that extra volume, so even if you have fine hair, you’re guaranteed to rock this look.

Steps:
  • Pin the top half of your hair up.
  • Tie the bottom half of your hair with an elastic band. Keep the ponytail nice and tight.
  • Split the ponytail into top and bottom sections and fix a small claw clip under the top section. This gives the ponytail a perky lift.
  • Let the top half of your hair down and pull all your hair back into one ponytail, securing it with a hair elastic.
  • Add one more claw clip under the top section of your ponytail for further volume.
  • Take a small section of hair from the side of your ponytail and wrap it around the hair elastic. Secure it with a bobby pin.

The Secret to Great Hair

While you’re having fun experimenting with different looks, remember that great hair always starts with healthy hair.

The humid weather causes more sebum production on your scalp, and perspiration from your face and neck also makes your hair greasier. Scorching days can dry your hair and scalp, leading to dandruff or an unwelcome frizz.

To combat this, the first step is to wash your hair regularly, depending on your hair type. We recommend washing your hair every other day if you have normal to dry hair, and daily if you have oily hair.

Secondly, check the ingredients of your shampoo and conditioner to make sure it doesn’t have harmful ingredients like sulfates, parabens or sodium chloride.

The occasional hair mask at home is ideal too, and of course there’s going for regular hair treatments once every few months to give your scalp a much-needed deep cleansing and rejuvenation. It’s also an excuse to pamper yourself once in a while!
