Achieve Flawless Skin With The 10-Step Korean Skincare Routine

Master the 10-step Korean skin care routine for flawless looking skin!

Have you ever wondered how K-drama stars have such smooth, porcelain skin? It’s all thanks to the 10-step Korean skincare routine! This trend has now become a global phenomenon. And before you ask, nope. You don’t have to do all 10 steps everyday.

Still, navigating the numerous skincare products and steps might be a daunting task. So here’s a definitive guide to mastering the 10-step Korean skincare routine to achieve that luminous glow to your skin.

Step 1: Double Cleanse

Whether you have dry, normal, oily or combination skin, as long as you use make up, it’s really important to double cleanse to prevent blackheads and pimples. Now you may be wondering what exactly is double cleansing?

Part 1 would be to remove the makeup from your skin. For a lightweight and refreshing option, Sephora’s Triple Action Cleansing water is great at taking away impurities and makeup without drying out the skin. For those with sensitive skin, LANEIGE’s Makeup Cleansing Water effectively removes waterproof makeup and leaves your skin feeling moisturised.

This cleanser effectively cleans your face without stripping moisture.

After rinsing your face, part 2 will be using a cleanser to get rid of other impurities that lie in the deeper part of your skin. Etude house’s Baking Powder Pore Cleansing Foam penetrates deep into your pores to remove dead skin cells, dirt and oil, thoroughly cleansing your skin without stripping any moisture.

Step 2: Exfoliate

This is the step that you don’t have to do daily! It’s best to exfoliate your skin once or twice a week. Exfoliating helps clean pores and removes that layer of dead skin cells to reveal smoother and brighter skin underneath. Think of this step like polishing a metal until it’s shiny. Do this step consistently and it’ll help your skin absorb your other skin care products more efficiently.

Exfoliate your skin 1 to 2 times per week for maximum results.

The sea salt cleanser line from Innisfree is perfect for this step. The sea salt gently removes dead skin and dirt leaving your skin smooth and moisturised. The sea salt jelly cleanser (20%) is great for those with sensitive skin. For those with combination skin, the light and airy texture of the sea salt whipping cleanser (30%) is perfect for you. If you have oily skin, get the sea salt perfect cleanser (40%) instead.

Step 3: Apply Toner

Before you start slapping on all that skincare, you have to prep your skin first. Toners remove any leftover residue from your cleansers and balances the moisture and pH levels of your skin. This preps your skin to effectively absorb the skincare products to follow.

Tip: Remember, your skin is like a sponge – it’s much more difficult to hydrate a hard and dry sponge as compared to one that’s already slightly damp.

This exfoliating toner is suitable for all skin types!

When choosing a toner, look out for ingredients that assist in hydration and has calming and soothing properties. The Pixi Glow Tonic from Sephora not only moisturises and balances the pH levels of your skin. It’s also a gentle exfoliating toner. Glycolic acid in the toner exfoliates and purifies, making your skin clearer and brighter. Its hypoallergenic formula also helps to soothe sensitive skin, making it ideal for all skin types!

Step 4: Use Essence

Most Koreans will say that this is the most important step in their skincare routine. This magical product has a lightweight consistency and treats your skin on a cellular level. Essences usually contain an active ingredient that optimizes your cell turnover rate to give you smoother, brighter skin. It won’t turn back time, but your skin will definitely look more youthful.

For smoother and brighter skin, use essence daily.

A cult beauty favourite will have to be the SK-II Facial Treatment Essence which you can get at Sephora. It contains more than 90% PITERA™ which is a naural bio-ingredient that is the key to SK-II’s miracle-like effects. This holy-grail product can brighten your skin, prevents sun spots, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles to give you smooth, supple and brighter skin!

Step 5: Apply Treatment

Treatments are sometimes referred to ampoules, serums, or boosters. They’re essentially more concentrated versions of essences and targets specific skin concerns like acne, fine lines and hyperpigmentation, great for when your skin needs that extra help.

Say goodbye to fine lines and wrinkles with this ampoule.

If you’re sitting in an office all day long, the cold air-conditioning can really take a toll on your skin. To combat that dry skin, Innisfree’s crowd favourite Jeju Lava Seawater Boosting Ampoule can provide your skin with that much needed deep hydration. Mix it up with effectors* (up to 2 effectors) and create your very own personalised ampoule that is customised to your skin’s needs. Make sure to use tapping motions to encourage maximum absorption!

Step 6: Put on a Sheet Mask

When you think of Korean skin care, sheet masks immediately come to mind! There are so many different types and it’s so difficult to choose just one. Our advice, just try them all! Most sheet masks are designed to be hydrating or soothing, which makes them suitable for all skin types. Of course, if you have allergies, it’s best to check the ingredient list and make sure it’s safe for you to use.

You can use sheet masks two to three times a week. More if your skin is really dry. And contrary to popular belief, you should not leave on your sheet mask till it’s completely dry! This will draw the moisture out of your skin, undoing all your hard work. The right time to remove the sheet mask is just before it starts to feel dry (around 15 to 20 minutes).

3 minutes is all you need for this face mask.

Or, if you don’t want to commit to the full 15 to 20 minutes, try the 3 Minutes in Morning Mask Pack In Pumpkin from Etude House. Just apply the mask onto your face for 3-mintues and it’ll moisturise your skin, getting it ready for makeup. Perfect for a morning pick me up!

Step 7: Use an Eye Cream

The skin around your eyes is the thinnest and most delicate. So it’s extra important to keep it hydrated. That’s where an eye cream comes in. Not only does it provide the area around your eyes that extra boost of moisture, it can also prevent dark circles, puffiness and crow’s feet!

Reduce dark circles, puffiness and crow’s feet with eye creams.

The ideal eye cream will have ingredients that aid in collagen regeneration, which is exactly what you can find in LANEIGE’s Time Freeze Eye Serum. It contains Dynamic Collagen™ technology that triggers collagen regeneration. It also contains watering peptide which helps recharge the skin’s hyaluronic acid layer for that needed moisture boost!

Just use fourth finger (which has the lightest pressure) to dab 3 small dots on your under eye as well as upper eye lid. Spread the eye care and gently go in circular motion to massage the eye product in. Finish by adding a little pressure on your temples to relax.

Step 8: Moisturise Your Skin

We’re almost at the end! Next step will be to use a moisturiser. After all that hard work putting on all those layers of hydration, it’s time to seal it all in. Pat this into your face for plump and smooth skin. Don’t forget to apply it on your neck as well!

Say goodbye to dry skin with this cream.

If you’re in the office all day, the cold air-conditioning can really take a toll on your skin. To combat the dry air, we recommend SoonJung 2X Barrier Intensive Cream from Etude House. The active ingredient, panthenol, will give your skin its much needed deep hydration. The formula is also low in pH and free from potential irritants like parabens, fragrances and artificial colour which makes it suitable for all skin types.

Step 9: Put on Sun Protection (In the day)

This step is the easiest and most effective way to prevent premature aging. The sun’s UV rays are notorious for contributing dark spots, wrinkles and fine lines. That’s why this step is so important for those living in Singapore where the sun is out all year round. And those who are mostly cooped up indoors, don’t think you can get by without it. You should use sunscreen too!

Sunscreen is a must for your day time skin care routine.

The Aqua UV Protection Cream Water Drop SPF50+ PA++++ from Innisfree is perfect for Singapore’s sweltering heat! The ultra-light texture glides on easily and absorbs quickly unlike other sunscreens that can feel greasy and sticky. A bonus especially if you live in hot and humid climates like Singapore!

Step 10: Put on a Sleeping Mask (At night)

We’ve finally made it to the last step of the 10-step Korean skin care routine – sleeping mask. If your skin needs that extra oomph, swap out your moisturiser for a sleeping mask. Think of it as an emergency skin booster. If you have a special event the next day and you want that extra glow, just massage a nickel-sized amount of product onto your face and you’ll wake up to softer and brighter skin.

For this, we recommend the Water Sleeping Mask from LANEIGE. What’s so special about this sleeping mask is that it contains Hunza Apricot Extract and Evening Primrose extract that help to revitalise the skin as we sleep. The lavender-scented version helps to reduce anxiety and improve your mood, making sure that you wake up with glowing, well-rested skin!

That’s all 10 steps explained! Remember, hydration is key to softer, plumper, more youthful skin. It’s not about slapping product after product onto your skin. It’s all about arming yourself with the right products to do the right things. So why not give the 10-step Korean skincare routine a try?
